Microlearning is a hot topic in the training industry right now and many of our competitors, like Skillsoft, are starting to offer shorter video courses. We have been producing short-form employee training videos since 2004. As you compare Skillsoft and ej4, you will find some important differences. If you haven't already, we encourage you to sign up for a free trial of our Thinkzoom LMS. You'll get immediate access to 100% of our video content and 100% of the functionality in our LMS.

Easy Access to Sample Courses

We like showing off our work because we're proud of it! That's why it's very easy for our web visitors to view full courses in each of the 10 topic categories in our video library. You'll have access to 20 videos just by visiting our page, and by simply providing your email address, you can view 20 more right away! That's access to 40 free videos on our site alone! If you really love what you're watching, you can sign up for a free trial of our Thinkzoom LMS by providing your name, email, and a name for your learning campus. After you submit the form, you are immediately taken to your trial campus site where you can view 100% of our content and 100% of our features. We have found that once people see our content, they are immediately interested in pursuing a partnership.

Skillsoft's website has few sample courses and requires a lot of information to view course demos. When the website promotes 165,000+ pieces of content, we found it curious why there were so few and so hard to find. Skillsoft also offers a free trial of their platform, Percipio, but it does not specify on the website if you have access to all of their training content and features.

Microlearning

As stated above, 100% of our content focus is on microlearning videos. We are the experts. Our videos average 7:12 because our research finds that "employees can only tolerate content presented in 7-to-11 minute bursts." (You can learn more about this research in our whitepaper, "The Science of Microlearning.") We take a complex topic, which in the past would have run 60 minutes or longer, and break it into a series of shorter videos. Each course can stand alone and has a beginning, middle, and end. In today's world of constant interruptions from email and text, employees can easily complete a full course in 5-10 minutes and not be bored to sleep with an old-fashioned, hour-long video trying to convey too much information in a tired format.

Skillsoft offers courses and books in addition to videos. Our research on the Skillsoft website found listings on many video courses that included the title, speaker name, summary, and ID number, but only a few course samples in the microlearning format. Not all their courses are microlearning and some are 30+ minutes long. Learners will not experience a consistent learning experience, as with ej4. (Read more about the value of a consistent learning experience below.)

Consistent Learning Experience

At ej4, we believe a consistent learning experience achieves better results with your learners. Just as trainers apply themselves to deliver consistent training, our videos aspire to do the same. This gives your organization confidence that all employees are receiving a consistent learning experience. All of our videos follow the same outline; music with the opening title; live, relatable hosts; creative and unexpected graphics, and audio cues that reinforce what the trainer is saying; and music with the close of the video. Each video has its own unique design and color palette, but learners will develop a comfort level with our consistent format.

Samples of Skillsoft training videos were found on YouTube, and there was a variety of creative styles. Some had a voiceover with a human hand doing live illustrations. While these samples were interesting, if they represent the actual courses, there is not a consistent learning experience in the style of the videos.

Creativity in Course Design

When it comes to creative content, no one else compares to ej4. Our presenters are specifically chosen to be relatable to a wide range of employees. They are filmed from the waist-up to better engage the viewer and are dressed in casual, approachable attire: not too corporate or intimidating! Our graphics are thoughtful, clever, and unexpected, and they reinforce the important learning concepts in the video. We also utilize sound effects, music, and even humor when it fits the topic. You never know what you'll discover in our videos - an employee's dog even makes an appearance in one of our courses! The combination of timing, visuals, and audio keeps the learner engaged.

Samples of Skillsoft courses were found on their website and on YouTube. Some featured a minimalist style with white or black backgrounds, role-playing actors, or a single presenter with no graphics to reinforce training. Another video featured a voiceover with screenshots of a computer demo, no special graphics or music. The best way to convey the difference in our creativity is to see some of our samples for yourself.

Content Administration

The experts at ej4 are dedicated to creating a thoughtful and curated library of content for our clients. Our approach is to provide "just enough" content that is "just right" to ensure that learners are changing behaviors so they can do their jobs better. A well-curated library keeps content administration from becoming overwhelming. In our whitepaper, "How Many eLearning Courses Do You Really Need?" we address how larger libraries tend to create challenges with organization, content updates, and a consistent experience.

The Skillsoft content page promotes over 165,000 pieces of content. The Skillsoft catalog is divided into collections that may help with content administration, but the sheer volume of content can be intimidating.

Client Service

ej4 is a boutique learning agency with hundreds of clients. Once a contract is signed, each client is assigned a learning consultant for personal service. Our consultants' priorities are a timely and smooth implementation and a high level of personal support throughout the entire contract. They will provide support for updates to our LMS, offer engagement ideas to improve usage and make course suggestions for learning initiatives. Our clients have the name, direct phone number, and direct email for our learning consultants, giving them unmitigated access to this resource for the duration of their contract. Our goal is to establish and maintain supportive relationships with our clients so they meet their learning objectives.

The Skillsoft website has many testimonial videos, which showcase customers telling their stories of long, satisfied relationships with Skillsoft. The website mentions eLearning consultants, customer support, and application engineers, but it is not clear if these teams are dedicated to individual clients or large departments working off a ticketing system.
